There’s plenty of pros for going private. Obviously it means you can keep the guest-list locked down, but it also allows for far greater flexibility on travel dates, group sizes (minimum of 4) and even age requirements. Berlin to Budapest: The Best of Central Europe by Train

Let’s start with Central Europe, the heartland of classical music, where much of the foundational principles of modern music were mastered. Our nine-day Rail Trip takes in some of the most significant classical cities, including Berlin and, most notably, Vienna. The Austrian capital is an unmissable destination for any member of an orchestra, due to its incredible history of classical musical, which saw Mozart and Beethoven plying their trade here, while legends like Schubert and Strauss were actually born and raised here. Our itinerary includes plenty of free time in the city, so be sure to snap a photo with statues of some of the greats, and don’t miss out on the opportunity to see the Vienna Philharmonic in action.

Close up of the guitar of a man playing traditional Portuguese music called fado

Complete Portugal by Train

If you’re keen to explore the origins of different music genres – not just where they come from but also why they spring into existence where they do – we think Portugal is the perfect place to visit with your class. Music is integral to Portuguese culture, something which is abundantly clear across the jazz bars and independent venues of Porto and Lisbon, the start and end points of our eight-day Rail Trip. Without doubt the most culturally significant contribution to music this country has offered, however, is fado. This soulful form of folk music is still played all over the country come nightfall, and you’ll get to experience a live show on our first night in Lisbon. It is an extraordinary form of music to see live, and particularly valuable to singers and songwriters who want to know how to pour their heart and soul into a song and performance.

Musicians playing traditional Irish music in a cosy pub

Fairytale Ireland

Ireland’s musical heritage is not dissimilar to that of fado music, with much of the heart and soul of the Irish people expressed via close-quarter performances in cosy pubs. Irish folk music usually consists of strings and woodwinds – usually the smaller varieties, so you can play it around a pub table! – accompanied by moving ditties ranging from comedy to tragedy. Our week-long tour of Ireland includes the opportunity to experience live music in Dublin, enjoy an evening of song at Oscar Madison’s Bar in Kinsale and at Dick Mack’s pub in Dingle, as well as experiencing the lively nightlife of Galway, home to The Garavan and Tigh Nora. You’ll gain a fascinating insight into the variety of paths folk music can go down, as well as the enviable skills of half-cut musicians playing in effortless harmony. Just don’t drink too much Guinness and forget all you’ve learnt!

Group of Taiko drummers drumming on Japanese Drums together.

Japan by Train: The Grand Tour

Japan, in many ways, is fascinating for its blend of the old and new. This is no different when it comes to music. This is a part of the world that loves pop music, but it also has a truly ancient relationship with song. You’ll get to learn about this first hand in Tokyo with a fascinating Taiko drumming class, where you’ll learn to master the rhythmic art of this pulsating form of percussion music. These drums were used as early as the sixth century, most likely during military action and religious ceremonies. In more modern times their significance has remained, featuring regularly in theatrical performances and even social justice movements. Having spent a morning on the drums, you’ll then spend an evening in one of Tokyo’s most entertaining karaoke bars – when in Rome!

Samba dancers, surrounding by falling confetti and glitter, performing in a carnival with their band

Dazzling Brazil

Is there a more naturally rhythmic culture on Earth? Brazil lives and breathes music just as much as it does football or food. You’ll see this all over the country, but Rio de Janeiro is the place to truly experience Brazilian music culture. A visit during Carnaval would be ideal, since the entire city erupts into song and dance, but if that proves too pricey an idea, our nine-day tour includes an insightful Carnaval experience at a local samba school. You’ll learn all about the spirit of Brazil’s primary form of expression – the music, the costumes and even the dance moves. There’s no better way of understanding rhythm, or the passion that goes into making music. It’s also a fascinating way to look at how dance can both accompany and inform the music itself.
