Georgia, at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, is one of the lesser-known wine countries – but it is also one of the oldest wine producers in the world, often referred to as the Cradle of Wine. The history of winemaking in the region dates back at least 8,000 years, and many wineries today still produce wine the traditional way, using enormous egg-shaped clay vessels known as “qvevri”, which are buried underground. Day three of our Sicily trip starts with a hike along an old Roman trail in the Madonie Mountains, before we stop in the small town of Castelbuono for lunch and a wine tasting at an authentic local restaurant. There’ll be plenty more wine flowing throughout the trip, with palette cleansers coming in the form of fine chocolate and world-beating gelato in Val di Noto.
